The new Berlin head offices of the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth are located in the heart of the government quarter, a few steps away from the “Unter den Linden” boulevard. This is the “Friedrichstadt” section of the city where a vibrant banking district evolved from 1880 onwards. Amidst it was the former headquarters of Deutsche Bank, which has been converted to house the two ministries’ head offices: two large blocks, the substance of which KSP Engel has opened up so that they can be experienced in all their glory. Columns, stucco, and the erstwhile banking hall had all disappeared behind conversion work in the late 1940s: Franz Ehrlich (1907–1984) modified both blocks to enable their use by several East German institutions. After their interim use by the “Gauck Authority”, the restoration took place from 2017 to 2023.
