In 2010/2011, devastating earthquakes hit the largest city in New Zealand's South Island, Christchurch. A natural disaster-proof restoration of the city has taken place in response to the damage. Known for its arts, culture, and surrounding landscape, the new central library, Tūranga, is one of nine anchor projects vital to Christchurch's redevelopment. A visually stun-ning symbol of hope, unity, and rebirth, Tūranga changed the way residents and visitors expe-rience Christchurch's city centre.

Located in Christchurch's historic Cathedral Square, the 9,500 square-metre library is a public space that strengthens community, advances knowledge, fosters innovation, and celebrates New Zealand's diverse cultures and heritages. The library's design is a graceful amalgamation of functionality, resilience, and cultural awareness. Tūranga is constructed to meet stringent performance criteria and sustain minimal structural damage during large earthquakes.
