Stockum, a district of Düsseldorf, is bound to design legislations that insist on a building being a white shell with gable roof and a ridge height of 10 meters; - the archetypical house. The design succeeds to transform this image by introducing a horizontal transposition of levels. Supplemental, the volume is sank into its topography.
Inserted into the basement a courtyard and an enclosed garden-room are formed facing the adult’s bedroom. The shift in levels not only generates a new and dynamic three-dimensionality, but also allows for the spacious living area to merge into a sheltered terrace. As kitchen storage and library are cantilevering over the lower courtyard they provide for a protected entrance zone.
There are spatially defined transits between inside and outside that merge garden and house. Within the boundaries of the design legislations a new typology emerges that seems suggestive of the future developments of the surrounding.
