This apartment house in Zurich-Oerlikon, originally built in 1946, was energetically renovated in 2010. The apartments were also extended with new generously sized living rooms and balconies. The project was carried out using prefabricated timber elements. The greater than average thickness of thermal insulation, together with the use of passive solar energy and the integration of advanced building technologies reduced the building’s energy use by a factor of 8. The house’s electricity requirement is covered by a photovoltaic system integrated into the roof construction. The clear architectonic separation of the extension and the existing building gives the building a harmonious and legible appearance.
